Apple Unveils Vision Pro: A New Era of Mixed Reality Experiences
The Apple Vision Pro is Apple’s first official mixed reality headset, intended to blend elements of both the virtual and physical world. It’s important to note that while it may resemble a VR headset, it’s not designed to keep users completely immersed in a virtual world. Instead, features such as EyeSight and Digital Persona aim to ensure that users stay engaged with the physical world while using the headset1.
The Apple Vision Pro comes with twin 4K displays for incredible HDR picture quality. If users wear glasses, they would need to get custom ZEISS inserts. EyeSight, one of the key features of the headset, uses a front display to indicate to others when the user is engaging with them or immersed in the headset. The headset also introduces visionOS, which allows for 3D experiences native to the Vision Pro. Apps for iOS and iPadOS will be available in a Vision Pro App Store, along with native visionOS apps1.
The headset includes a crown on the top that allows users to control their level of immersion, from augmented reality to virtual reality. No physical controllers are needed for the Vision Pro, as it relies on eye and hand tracking, as well as voice commands. Users can take spatial photos and videos with a simple tap of a button. EyeSight will let others around the user know when a photo or video is being taken1.
In terms of design, the front of the visor features a display underneath a curved pane of 3D laminated glass. This pane also serves as a lens for the Vision Pro’s extensive camera array, which includes 12 cameras and six microphones, eliminating the need for controllers. Users can interact with the device through a combination of eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice commands1.
The headset frame is made from a custom aluminum alloy and is curved to fit the user’s face. Apple has also used a modular design for the Light Seal (what Meta calls a facial interface) to ensure a perfect fit. The Light Seal comes in various shapes and sizes and is made of a soft fabric for improved comfort1. The headset also includes a headband available in various sizes and made of a 3D knitted fabric. This headband houses speakers, termed “audio pods,” that provide Personalized Spatial Audio for immersive experiences1.
The Vision Pro features two buttons on the top: an action button for taking spatial photos and videos and a crown, similar to the Apple Watch, for controlling the level of immersion1. The headset can be used all day when plugged in, and can also work with an external battery that lasts for about two hours1.
The Vision Pro is priced at $3,499, making it one of the most expensive mainstream headsets on the market. Initially, it will only be available in the U.S., starting in early 2024, with availability in other countries to follow1.
Disney has partnered with Apple to create exclusive experiences for the Vision Pro, including Disney World and Marvel games1.
